Environmental Business Model Canvas Part 1

Recap

In the last module, you used the economic BMC, and the Origin Coffee example, to help you construct an economic BMC for your organisation.

Understanding The Environmental Business Model Canvas

In this module, you are going to apply an environmental layer to your BMC using the triple layered business model canvas (TLBMC) developed by Alexandre Joyce and Raymond L. Paquin (2016).

Joyce and Paquin use the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to measure the environmental impacts of products or services. The LCA uses a range of indicators:

  • CO2 equivalent emissions (CO2e)
  • Eco-systems quality
  • Human health
  • Resource depletion
  • Water use

The LCA evaluates these impacts over their full life cycle, e.g., raw material extraction, manufacturing, distribution, use and end of life.

The main objective of using Joyce and Paquin’s environmental layer of the TLBMC is to assess how your organisation might generate more environmental benefits than environmental impacts and, therefore, become an environmentally regenerative business.

It allows you to understand where your organisation’s biggest environmental impacts lie and so provides insights for where your organisation might focus its attention when creating environmentally oriented innovations.
