About Arca

Arca. Italian for ark. Building skills for the circular economy.

Accelerating Circular Skills for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, better known as Arca, is a collaborative research project that delivers workshops and training programmes to individuals, microbusinesses and SMEs, supporting them to move towards circular economic models. Led by the University of Exeter, in partnership with Truro & Penwith College, the project is part-funded through the European Social Fund (part of the European Strategic Investment Framework for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly).

Arca offers dynamic training programmes that are co-designed and delivered by academic experts and local businesses already working in the circular space. From designers to engineers and scientists, our network of entrepreneurs are on-hand to share their knowledge and inspire new ways of working that are adaptable to your business.

What is the circular economy?

The circular economy is an innovative solution to a pervasive problem – a solution that’s shaking up the status quo, and revolutionising businesses worldwide.

Traditional business models focus on taking raw materials from the Earth, making a product, and eventually throwing that product away as waste. This linear model is known as the ‘take-make-waste’ system. The circular economy offers a fresh approach that seeks to eliminate waste, circulate products, and regenerate our natural resources.

From farmers using beavers for ecosystem restoration to start-ups designing surfboards from recycled plastic, the circular economy is everywhere. It is relevant to every business, and it is thriving here in Cornwall.
